Job Summary

Responsible for the development, evaluation, and operational and fiscal management of hospital school services for inpatients and outpatients.  Educational services include patient assessment, instruction, interdisciplinary collaboration, and communication with families and community schools to identify and/or facilitate school placement or re-entry.  Assures delivery of quality, efficient, lawful, cost effective, and age specific academic and educational services for patients.  Supervises all School Services personnel.

Job Responsibilities

Human Resource Management:

  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, coaching, and retention of staff.
  • Plans and facilitates programs fostering staff development and teambuilding.
  • Establishes performance standards and provides staff and students with ongoing feedback.
  • Responsible for the performance evaluation process for identified staff.
  • Creates and supports an environment that fosters teamwork cooperation, respect, and diversity.
  • Fosters and maintains an environment where staff feel valued, appreciated and recognized.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to all areas of responsibility to support and empower individuals to make decisions, enhance skills, and promote Family-Centered Care practices.

Program Development:

  • Develops, coordinates, assesses, and directs school services to provide school age children and adolescents with appropriate academic/education services reflective of their needs.
  • Responsible for the daily operations of the program, including but not limited to: patient/teacher assignments, staff scheduling, and staff meeting facilitation.
  • Ensures compliance with professional standards, and documentation and regulatory requirements (e.g. Joint Commission, CMS, PA educational laws, school reports, patient care documentation, billing, and productivity).
  • Functions as a member of and integrates the educational programs into the interdisciplinary team to promote optimal patient care.
  • Serves as a content expert, representing the school services perspective on hospital-wide committees.
  • Develops complete, current and relevant policies and procedures in accordance with organizational objectives, departmental & program scope of service, Family-Centered Care practices, and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Integrates trends in healthcare and the profession to identify future needs for program development, space, and financial resources.

Quality/Process Improvement:

  • Ensures services meet professional standards, and regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Provides for ongoing monitoring of key indicators and utilizes the established performance improvement process to improve services/care.
  • Oversees and maintains program data collection.
  • Leads the development, oversight, and completion of department goals.

Fiscal Management:

  • Is a strong financial steward with solid understanding of all financial components of the Hospital School Program billing process (e.g. guarantee of payments, invoices, collections, etc.).
  • Develops and adheres to operating and donor funded budgets.
  • Speaks to the financial needs and philanthropic benefits with existing and potential donors.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

PA Teacher Certification in Elementary, Secondary, or Special Ed

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Master’s Degree

Required Experience:  Seven (7) years of experience teaching children

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Experience:

  • Two (2) years of experience working at a children’s hospital

All CHOP employees who work in a patient building or who provide patient care are required to receive an annual influenza vaccine unless they are granted a medical or religious exemption.
