Teacher – Child and Adolescent – Levine Children’s Hospital

Overview

• Prior experience working with students who are Behaviorally and Emotionally Disabled.
• Two years teaching experience strongly preferred.
• Position will work in tandem with the primary care team and is responsible for providing brief intervention, education ad consultation to patient and families on the Behavioral Health Observation Unit
• Facilitate the delivery of services within the guidelines set by the specific unit
• Bedside/classroom teaching will occur 50% of the time on Acute Care Units and 50% of the time on Behavioral Health Observation Unit
• 40-hour work week: Monday-Friday year round with ability to utilize acrued PTO for holidays and breaks.

Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH) has taken the community to another level of service in order to provide care for the growing population of children in our region.  At 247 beds, LCH is the largest children’s hospital between Atlanta and Washington DC.  It serves high patient acuity as the flagship children’s hospital within the innovative Atrium Health and offers a full complement of over 125 pediatric subspecialists in over 25 different pediatric specialties.  There are 4 pediatric hospitalist teams, a 20-bed PICU (including Cardiac ICU), an 85-bed NICU, and an inpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility.  Levine Children’s also has the region’s first 24/7 emergency room just for kids, staffed by doctors trained in pediatric emergency medicine.  LCH has repeatedly been ranked among the “Best Children’s Hospitals” in the nation by US News & World Report.

Job Summary

The Teacher provides information, education, support and guidance to parents, siblings and other family members. They work closely with the appropriate school systems to ensure proper documentation for students and acquire necessary materials for the students while they are patients. The Teacher provides emotional support for families and encourages optimum development of children facing a broad range of challenging experiences, particularly those related to healthcare and hospitalization. Assists with transitioning the patient to community settings. Works closely with other disciplines and specialties within the department and facility to assure a cohesive approach to patient care.

Essential Functions

• Evaluates patients and establishes appropriate patient care plans to include necessary educational training and activities, patient/caregiver education as warranted by the patient’s diagnosis and condition.
• Gathers and interprets appropriate data from the medical record, physician reports, patient and/or family and school reports as evidenced by documentation.
• Provides direct educational services to the patient in accordance with their academic potential.
• Adheres to Public Law 94-142 in the provision of services to patients with exceptional needs.
• Acts as a liaison between the patient’s rehabilitation program and the patient’s local school system or college to facilitate re-entry and successful ongoing participation.
• Participates in treatment planning, conferences and staffing.
• Serves as a Homebound Teacher for patients grades K-12 with no cognitive impairments by getting assignments from the school and teaching them information they have missed.
• Performs cognitive retraining for reading, writing and math for patients ages 3+ to prepare them for school re-entry.
• Develops discharge educational recommendations.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of human growth and development.

Physical Requirements

Hearing (corrected) adequate for oral/aural communication with patients, staff, family, visitors etc. Vision (corrected) adequate for reading. Intelligible speech and adequate language/cognitive skills to perform job duties. Must be able to push patients in a wheelchair or stretcher. Lifting of patients, equipment or supplies will be required up to 20 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally. Able to laterally transfer patients 100 pounds rarely. Sitting, standing and walking required throughout the day. Job duties sometimes require climbing stairs, kneeling, twisting, bending; on occasion crouching, crawling and reaching overhead. Must be able to transfer patients. Must be able to demonstrate any appropriate exercise and activities to patients/caregivers. Work is in a fast-paced clinical environment. The work is primarily indoors but occasionally outdoors.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in education from an accredited program required. Must maintain a current North Carolina teaching certificate. Special Education or Exceptional Children experience preferred. K-12 Certifications are preferred. Two years teaching experience preferred. Knowledge of State and Federal Education Laws and Requirements including Special Education. Maintains CPR certification.
